Glasgow Rangers youngster Greg Docherty was one of the players who left Ibrox in the summer.

Greg Docherty of Rangers is seen during the Pre-Season Friendly match between Rangers and Wigan Athletic at Ibrox Stadium on July 29, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

In comments reported by the Shropshire Star, Greg Docherty has admitted that he is aware that his loan spell may be more beneficial in opening more doors for him if it does not improve his prospects at Rangers.

Docherty was one of the players who left Ibrox in the summer, with Steven Gerrard allowing the youngster to join Shrewsbury on loan. The Gers strengthened their midfield options significantly in the last window, so it made a lot of sense for the former Hamilton ace to leave on a temporary basis.

With Docherty proving to be a popular player amongst a lot of the Gers supporters, many will be willing the midfielder to prove a point to his parent club while he is away. And while he believes that Gerrard is monitoring his progress closely, he conceded that he has to accept that his time away may simply make it easier to find another club if things do not work out.

“I wanted to dip my toe in the water down here. It could be the only time I leave Glasgow, I want to be a successful Rangers player,” he said, as reported by the Shropshire Star.

“It might not be. It might open a few doors. You never know.

“Hopefully the manager has taken notice and from what he’s told me so far, he will be.”

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is seen during the Scottish Premier League between Celtic and Rangers at Celtic Park Stadium on September 2, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

It is going to be a difficult task for Docherty to enjoy the kind of spell in League One that leaves Gerrard pushing him right up the pecking order without hesitation.

But as long as he shows plenty of promise and plays regularly for the Shrews, then he undoubtedly stands a fantastic chance of getting a second chance to prove himself at Ibrox – especially as he hardly proved to be an underwhelming signing during the second-half of last season.
