Docherty left Rangers in the summer to join Shrewsbury Town on a season-long loan.
Greg Docherty has told the Daily Record that he wants to remain at Rangers beyond the end of his current contract, which currently expires in the summer of 2022.
The 22-year-old joined English League One side Shrewsbury Town on a season-long loan from Rangers after Steven Gerrard signed Scott Arfield, Ovie Ejaria and Lassana Coulibaly.
A boyhood fan, Docherty only joined Rangers in January from Hamilton and clocked up 14 appearances in all competitions for the Gers, adding three assists. He has continued his impressive form down south.
Asked about his future at Ibrox, Docherty says he fully intends on seeing out his current contract which still has four years left to run – and would even consider extending his current deal beyond that date.
“So I’ve taken a gamble coming down here to Shrewsbury. The hope is that while I’m missing out on some big nights this season, I can develop to the point where I’ll be able to look forward to many of them in the years to come,” Docherty said.
“I’ve still got four years on my contract and I fully intend to see it out – if not extend it.”
Docherty has taken to life with John Askey’s side, scoring three goals and creating another two strikes during 10 league and cup appearances as the Shrews currently sit in 16th place in England’s third tier.
The Scotland Under-21 international will be hoping to continue to show Gerrard that he is capable of adding something to Rangers in the future, but he is certainly going the right away about it.
