Ibrox club Glasgow Rangers manager Steven Gerrard plans to keep in touch with Greg Docherty, says the Gers midfielder on loan at Shrewsbury Town.

Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty has told The Daily Record that Ibrox manager Steven Gerrard plans to keep in touch with him.

Docherty joined Shrewsbury Town in League One in England on a season-long loan deal from Rangers in the summer transfer window.

The 21-year-old midfielder moved to Rangers from Hamilton Academical in the January transfer window for a transfer fee reported by The Daily Record to be worth £600,000.

Docherty has stated that Rangers manager Gerrard plans to keep in touch with him, and the midfielder has also suggested that he wants to be at the Gers in the long run.

“Even while I’m away, the manager still wants me involved at Rangers, learning about his way of doing things,” Docherty told The Daily Record. “So while I’m down here I’ll be sent videos on different sessions.

“I know I’m nowhere near the finished article yet. I’m in constant contact with the staff at Rangers and a few of them are coming down to the Shrewsbury games to see me play.

“I’m still very young and I will be going back to Rangers at 22 with three years left on my contract.”

Future at Rangers

Docherty’s aforementioned comments show that Rangers manager Gerrard thinks that the midfielder has a future at Ibrox.

What the youngster needs to do this season is gain first-team and competitive experience at Shrewsbury and keep an eye on how things are going at Rangers.

The 21-year-old has a lot of potential, and the Scotland Under-21 international can certainly succeed at Rangers in the long run.

Harry Cochrane exit

Meanwhile, Scotland Under-17 national team boss Brian McLaughlin has explained why Rangers decided to part company with 17-year-old midfielder Harry Cochrane – who is now starring for Heart of Midlothian – when he was younger.

McLaughlin told The Scottish Sun about Cochrane: “I wouldn’t say he was released because that would be harsh on Rangers.

“They probably looked at the boy and thought he’s probably not going to play here right now because of the midfield players that had at that age – Billy Gilmour being one of them.

“They decided, along with the family, that maybe he should leave and it would benefit the boy. It was a brave decision from Rangers.”
