The loaned-out Rangers midfielder, Greg Docherty, has revealed that he has been promised a pre-season back at Ibrox.

Docherty is currently impressing at Shrewsbury Town, where he has scored or made 17 goals in 35 games since he arrived from Rangers last summer.

But in quotes published by the Scottish Sun on Wednesday, the 22-year-old admitted his aim is to “have a go at it” at Ibrox – although he is open to a return south of the border if not, where he has acknowledged he is being watched through a “big shop window”.

“I have been told that I will have a pre-season at Rangers and then they will be watching me and it is up to me so show what I can do,” he said. “I want to finish this season strong, have a good break and then take it from there.

“I am in constant touch with the loan manager at Rangers (Billy Kirkwood) and he has been great with me. He has been down to a few of my games and it is clear the message that they want from me.”

And Docherty has even had words with the Rangers manager himself, Steven Gerrard.

“I had a meeting with the manager when I popped into the training ground and he pulled me aside and said to just keep doing what you are doing and get the games. He is happy with my progress so for me it is nice to come back here knowing that they are taking note and if I keep working hard and keep improving I will go back with a decent amount of stats for them and I can really push on.

“As soon as I checked my phone after the first game [for Shrewsbury] against Wolves, when I scored, the staff had texted me straight away. That is a nice boost for me to know that they are taking note. Every time I go back in they seem pleased to see me which is nice.

“It is a learning curve for me coming down here and I have got to keep going and see what happens.”

Greg Docherty of Rangers is seen during the Pre-Season Friendly match between Rangers and Wigan Athletic at Ibrox Stadium on July 29, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Docherty, for whom Rangers paid around £650,000 to sign from Hamilton a year ago [Transfermarkt], faces competition from Scott Arfield, Ross McCrorie, Ryan Jack, Graham Dorrans, Glen Kamara and Matt Polster for a place in Gerrard’s central midfield.

And another rival could yet emerge in the shape of Steven Davis, whose Southampton contract expires at the end of his Rangers loan spell this summer.
