Arsenal fans are delighted to hear that Roma are still keen on Granit Xhaka following their recent summer interest.
Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport have claimed that Jose Mourinho sees Xhaka as his number one target ahead of the summer transfer window.
The 29-year-old signed a new contract in the summer, despite well-documented claims that Roma wanted to bring him to Serie A.
For one reason or another, a move didn’t materialise and Xhaka stayed put and he is now trying to help Mikel Arteta to a Champions League finish.
Whatever happens with Xhaka, he will always be a marmite-like figure in north London and may never win over his fans.
That’s why many seem to be happy that Mourinho wants to still lure his talents to Italy during the next transfer window.
From Arsenal’s perspective, if that does happen, then they will be glad they added more years to his contract because it increases his value.
This will allow them to flex their muscles and sell their hard-hitting midfielder for a lot more.
And, for once, it seems as though those in the boardroom have tied down a player and they will get rewarded for it at the end.
Usually, when ageing Arsenal players sign contracts it ends in near disaster, cite Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Mesut Ozil as examples.
But this one now seems like a very clever move and one that might just benefit all parties.
