Aston Villa have confirmed the signing of Stoke midfielder Glenn Whelan and the fans are generally pretty chuffed.

Glenn Whelan has completed his £1m transfer from Stoke City to Aston Villa, as reported by the BBC, signing a two-year contract with the Championship club.

Whelan becomes Steve Bruce’s fourth new addition of the summer window along with John Terry, Ahmed Elmohamady and Manchester United loanee Sam Johnstone.

It brings to an end a nine-and-a-half-year stay with the Potteries for the 33-year-old, who joined the Staffordshire club from Sheffield Wednesday back in January 2008.

During his time at the Bet365 Stadium, Whelan played 337 games in all competitions and scored eight goals, helping Stoke to promotion to the Premier League in his first season.

The news has been greeted in fairly positive fashion by Villa fans, who are pleased to see someone with such vast experience joining the team.

Not everyone is convinced, though.
