Javier Mascherano wants to see Sergio Aguero follow in his footsteps at Barcelona amid reports linking the legendary striker with Leeds United and Tottenham Hotspur, speaking to Tuttomercatoweb.
When Leeds were linked to a stunning summer swoop for Manchester City’s all-time record goalscorer, you’d have been forgiven for filing that particular rumour in the bin.
But look a little closer and, with the ambitious Andrea Radrizzani pulling the strings, Leeds’ interest in a modern-day Premier League great should come as no surprise.
Radrizzani has attempted to bring Edinson Cavani, Gigi Buffon, Francesco Totti and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Elland Road in the past.
In fact, his 2018 swoop for Marcelo Bielsa epitomises how big the Yorkshire giants tend to think.
Unfortunately for Leeds, the chances of Aguero competing with Patrick Bamford for a place in Bielsa’s starting XI next season look slim.
ESPN reports Barcelona have offered the 32-year-old a contract that would keep him at Camp Nou until 2023 – a deal Mascherano’s former Argentina international teammate is expected to sign.
“Sergio Aguero would be a great signing for Barcelona,” says Mascherano, a five-time La Liga champion in Catalonia.

“Such news can only excite those who love this club. I sincerely hope the operation can be closed – because of the quality of the player and also because it could help to keep (Lionel) Messi.
“Taking Aguero could seduce Leo and persuade him to renew (his contract).”
In March, The Telegraph reported £260,000-a-week Aguero would consider a move to Chelsea and a Tottenham side that could do with a prolific centre-forward as Harry Kane pushes for a move.
Everton were linked too, via 90Min.
