Schalke 04 sporting director Jochen Schneider has vowed to keep Liverpool target Malick Thiaw after he penned a new contract at the club, Sport.de report.
The youngster broke through this season and made his Bundesliga debut.
A report in April by Arena Napoli claimed Liverpool were among several top clubs keen on signing Thiaw who had a bargain £7 million release clause.
Schalke, however, have managed to tie him down to a new four-year deal.
Speaking to reporters, Schneider claims Schalke will do their upmost to retain him.
“Malick has undoubtedly great potential and was able to collect his first few appearances in the Bundesliga last season. Coach David Wagner and his team will continue to carefully introduce him to the first division. It is our goal to keep talented players like Malick and develop them wisely,” Schneider explained.
Sport.de claim Liverpool remain keen, but Jurgen Klopp’s former assistant David Wagner will start to play him more regularly at Schalke next season.
Thiaw has drawn comparisons with current Liverpool centre-back Joel Matip.
Standing at 6ft 3inch, the 18-year-old is quick, good in the air and confident in possession.
If reports about his release clause are true, then Liverpool have missed out on the opportunity to strike a bargain and find a potential future partner for Virgil van Dijk.
The Reds may have won the Premier League at a canter this season, but Klopp will not allow his squad to rest on their laurels as they chase further success.
A new defender to provide competition for the likes of Matip and Joe Gomez, both of whom have struggled with injuries, will be a priority at Anfield.
