It’s that time of the year again when Tottenham Hotspur are linked with a move for Gareth Bale.
And they received a potential boost in that regard earlier this week when The Telegraph reported that Real Madrid would pay 50 percent of his £600,000-a-week wages if he were to leave on loan.
That would still mean Tottenham have to pay £300,000 per week on the 31-year-old, who left Spurs to join Real back in 2013.
His future at the Bernabeu looks pretty bleak and Zinedine Zidaine appears to have very little intention of bringing him back in from the cold.
Bale turned 31 earlier this summer, but his former Lilywhites team-mate Luka Modric, who plays with him in the Spanish capital, has described the Welshman as a ‘great player’ who can still be a big asset to any side.
He told The Times: “For me, Gareth is still a great player and still has a lot to offer in football.
“It just depends on him, if he has enough hunger or desire to keep going. I think he has but whether his situation finishes here or continues, he can still be an important player.”
Bale will undeniably lose a yard or two of that electric pace that terrified Premier League defences once upon a time.
But the Southampton product still has enough strings to his bow to be an important player in other aspects of his game.
We’re talking about the world’s most expensive footballer at one point, having joined Real in a £85 million deal seven years back, but it’s still so unlikely that Tottenham – who took out a £200 million loan earlier in the summer – will commit to bringing him back on loan, given the figures mooted.
