Marcelo Bielsa did a lot of good at Leeds United.
The Argentine transformed fringe players into superstars, earned Leeds a long-awaited promotion and had his team playing one of the most entertaining brands of football we’ve ever seen.
However, while Bielsa did a lot of good, there were a couple of mistakes that were made along the way.
From refusing to drop Kiko Casilla to failing to get the most out of Eddie Nketiah, Bielsa did get some things wrong.
Hindsight is 20/20 in football, and now, it looks like Bielsa has made another mistake regarding Jay-Roy Grot.
Indeed, the Dutch striker didn’t get a single sniff under the Argentine during his time at Leeds, but now, he’s shining in Europe.
Now playing for Viborg in Denmark, Grot has nine goals and three assists in 17 league appearances and has been hailed as one of the best strikers in the league.
“We will have to put him in that box (with the league’s best strikers). Great player, with physicality and speed. He just has so much to deal with as a defender. And he’s uncomfortable (as an opponent) because he has the speed and the physicality,” Pundit Kenneth Petersen said of Grot.
“And then he just fits in perfectly with the way Viborg plays. He is a top striker.”
Standing at 6ft4 and possessing electric pace, Grot certainly had the physical capabilities to be a Premier League star, but sadly, Bielsa didn’t fancy him for one reason or another.
It’s strange because a player with such physical gifts is usually the type of player Bielsa loves to mould into a star, but he deserted Grot almost immediately.
Now, with Leeds severely lacking depth up front, it really feels like they could do with a player like Grot who could be a brilliant deputy for Patrick Bamford.
