Jamie Carragher has taken to Twitter after Liverpool announced that Michael Laffey had signed a professional contract at Anfield.
What’s the story?
Well, the 17-year-old is performing superbly for Liverpool’s Under-18 side, and he has now been rewarded with a professional contract.
Laffey – who plays as a central midfielder for the Reds – has made nine appearances in the Under-18 Premier League so far this season, scoring two goals as Liverpool sit fourth in the table.
The teenager scored in a 4-2 win over Manchester United’s Under-18 side earlier this term, before netting a crucial strike as Liverpool’s Under-18s defeated Blackburn’s young guns by a 2-1 scoreline.
After hearing the news, Carragher wrote: “Great prospect! Keep up the good work Laffey.”
Laffey has been with Liverpool since Under-10 level, after joining from Merseyside rivals Everton.
In their official announcement of the news, Liverpool wrote that the Merseyside-born prodigy is a set-piece specialist who often takes freekicks and corners for the Under-18 side.
It is also said that Laffey has a “good range of passing and impressive awareness” while also helping to “knit his team together in the middle of the park, get on the ball and impose a tempo on the game” – impressive stuff.
Liverpool fans have reason to be excited about Laffey
In our view, there is no reason why Liverpool fans shouldn’t get excited about Laffey based on the gems who have emerged from Kirkby in recent times – especially with Jürgen Klopp in charge up until 2026, at least.
The German has overseen the development of prospects such as Trent Alexander-Arnold, Neco Williams, Ben Doak and Mateusz Musialowski, to name a few.

Klopp also developed a number of gems at Borussia Dortmund, handing a big break to Christian Pulisic while also turning Mario Götze into a superstar.
Be sure to keep an eye on Laffey, as he could soon make his first-team debut if he keeps up these impressive displays.
