Frenkie de Jong and Cody Gakpo praised Tottenham Hotspur transfer target Memphis Depay after he helped the Netherlands reach the quarter-finals of the Qatar World Cup.

The Barcelona forward opened the scoring as the Netherlands secured a 3-1 win over the USA, with his international teammate de Jong stating that he was ‘great’ during the game, as he told beINSPORTS.

Things might not be going as well as Depay wants at the Nou Camp, but he is showing his worth on football’s biggest stage out in the Middle East.

Louis van Gaal’s side have perhaps surprised a few people with how they have performed at the World Cup, with a number of young stars shining, including Cody Gakpo.

When Depay reacted to his nation’s win, in the comments section of his Instagram post, he was praised by a number of his teammates, including Gakpo, Steven Bergwijn and Sergi Roberto posting fire emojis, plus calling him a ‘lion’.

“I think in the counter-attacks, we damaged them a lot,” said de Jong. “I think our fullbacks did a great job. Memphis was great, so we are happy with that.”

PREMIER LEAGUE RETURN FOR DEPAY?

The last time Depay was on the Premier League stage, things didn’t fair well for the all-action forward.

Some would say he joined Manchester United at a time when they were declining, and in truth, they were and still are.

Added to that, Depay himself was a young gun, but fast forward to the present, and the more mature 28-year-old is wanted by the likes of Tottenham, Manchester United and Arsenal.
