Speaking on the BBC Match of the Day Top 10 Podcast, Micah Richards has been full of praise for Liverpool’s James Milner.

Richards of course played with Milner at Manchester City, and he says that the midfielder is actually a better footballer than people give him credit for.

In recent years Milner has been labelled as more of a workhorse than a fantastic technical player, but Richards believes that he deserves more respect.

What has Richards said about Milner?

Richards was asked to name the 10 best title-winning teams from the Premier League era, and he inevitably spoke about the Liverpool side from last season, picking Milner out as a player he was really happy for.

“I was happy for Liverpool, especially my former team-mate James Milner. He is one of the funniest guys you’ll ever meet. He’s the first in to training, last out. He didn’t get as much respect as he should have at City – he was seen as a utility man. Milner was better technically than people give him credit for – great right foot, great crosser of the ball, great mentality, and he’s a Yorkshire lad.” Richards said.

Underrated

Milner has often been labelled as an underrated player, and we can’t help but agree with that view.

Yes, he’s a footballer who puts in the hard miles and does the dirty work, but he’s also a technically superb player.

After all, he’s a former PFA Young Player of the Year winner and he also co-holds the record for the most assists in a single Champions League campaign.

We agree with Richards, Milner’s technical ability deserves to be recognised more widely.
