Arsenal technical director Edu has lauded new signing Matt Turner after the 28-year-old was this Monday finally announced as a Gooner four months after the transfer was confirmed by the New England Revolution.
Speaking to Arsenal’s official website, the Brazilian transfer chief expressed his delight over the signing of Turner, who joins the north London side with the aim of being Aaron Ramsdale’s understudy for next season with Bernd Leno set to leave the Gunners in the coming weeks.
Turner has been one of the best goalkeepers in MLS for the past two seasons, with the New Jersey-born shot-stopper last season playing a massive role in the Revs’ Supporters Shield triumph as the 28-year-old aims to become the US’ number one for the FIFA World Cup this winter.
Indeed, Turner, a lifelong Arsenal supporter, could be an astute signing for the Gunners if the goalkeeper can adapt to Premier League life soon, and when asked about the transfer, Edu was very happy to have brought the American keeper to north London after months of keeping the deal hidden.
The Arsenal transfer chief said when asked about the signing of Turner: “We are delighted that Matt is joining us. Matt is a goalkeeper with established qualities and experience, who will be a great addition to our squad.
“We identified Matt some time ago and worked hard to ensure that his transfer was complete so he could join us in time for our pre-season in July. We now look forward to Matt joining us, settling into his new home and working ahead of next season.”
New signing Turner could challenge Ramsdale for Arsenal’s no. 1 spot

Ramsdale is expected to take the no. 1 spot again next season for Arsenal, but following a rough end to last campaign, Turner could sense an opportunity to replace the England international should he impress in pre-season and in the cup competitions for the Gunners.
After all, Turner will be determined to play as much football as possible next season with the World Cup just around the corner, and given how strong the competition is for the US for that starting berth between the sticks, the Arsenal keeper will want to be the man who edges out the competition.
