Aston Villa narrowly overcame fierce rivals Birmingham City this weekend.
Aston Villa won 1-0 at home to Birmingham City this weekend to inflict more damage on the Blues’ survival hopes.
It was not the result new Birmingham manager Harry Redknapp was looking for in his first match at the helm, but thanks to a late strike from substitute Gabby Agbonlahor Villa took the points and the bragging rights.
After the match a number of Villa players took to social media to celebrate the win, including winger Jack Grealish and goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.
Grealish started the match but made way for the day’s hero, Agbonlahor, shortly before the hour-mark.
“Could only have been Gabs,” he wrote on Twitter. “So buzzing for him. What a great win! Best atmosphere I’ve played in at Villa Park. Fans were great.”
On-loan ‘keeper Johnstone posted a wonderful celebratory picture of the Villa team in the dressing room after the final whistle, with a simple four-word statement likely to excite his own supporters and rile Blues fans in equal measure.
“The city is ours,” he wrote.
Next up for Villa is a trip to Blackburn Rovers next weekend, as Steve Bruce’s side look to end the season on a high.
