As many of you will know, Tottenham supremo Daniel Levy is a man who drives a hard bargain – he certainly doesn’t splash much cash around.
That much was evident when he famously deducted the price of five Luka Modrić shirts from the transfer fee, after Dinamo Zagreb’s Executive Director Zdrvako Mamic requested them to commemorate the transfer.
Levy’s tightness was again seen back in 2018, when he offered just £3 million plus Josh Onomah for Jack Grealish – Aston Villa’s asking price was set at £25 million, as revealed by the Independent.
That was a huge gaffe, as the Villans now consider Grealish – one of the Premier League’s best – to be worth over £100 million.
After last night’s events in Dortmund, it seems that Levy has made a similar error.
Borussia Dortmund’s 17-year-old wonderkid Jude Bellingham was also on Tottenham’s radar before his name went up in lights.
Levy offered just £1 million for the prodigy in 2019, which was swiftly rejected according to The Telegraph.
Just one year later, Bellingham completed a £30 million move to Borussia Dortmund worth £56,000-a-week, a salary that Spurs easily could’ve afforded.
The rest is, as they say, history.
Bellingham became the youngest Englishman to score in the Champions League last night with a brilliant goal against Manchester City, of all teams.
His value has surely doubled, if not trebled, and his rise now makes Levy’s £1 million offer look rather insulting, in all honesty.
You’d think Levy would’ve learned from losing out on Grealish because of a mediocre, frankly unacceptable bid.
However, he clearly hasn’t, as it looks like Tottenham let another wonderkid slip through their fingers.
