The Leeds United striker is currently on loan to Doncaster Rovers.
The Doncaster Rovers manager, Grant McCann, has warned Mallik Wilks the on-loan Leeds United forward might never break into Marcelo Bielsa’s first team plans.
Wilks has impressed since joining Rovers on a six-month deal in the summer, scoring four goals and setting up two in 10 appearances.
And, speaking to the Yorkshire Post this week, McCann expressed a desire to sign the 19-year-old on a longer-term basis.
But while circumstances at Leeds – the leaders of the Championship whose senior forwards are also excelling – could aid Doncaster’s cause, McCann envisages another potential obstacle.
“My personal opinion is he (Wilks) will not ever get a chance at Leeds,” the 38-year-old told the Yorkshire Post.
“I think that they will strengthen again in January and they are strong up there (in attack), with the boy Tyler Roberts. It is going to be difficult for Mallik.
“Him and his agent need to decide whether he wants to stay at Leeds and extend his contract or Mallik wants to go and sample the Football League.
“He loves it here. If it was my decision, I would sign him today as he has huge potential in him.
“But if he keeps going in the way he is, there are going to be clubs sniffing around him.”
Wilks, a product of the Leeds academy system, is in the final year of his contract at Elland Road – another factor which could hinder his first team chances there.
The Leeds native made his one and only Whites appearance in the 1-0 FA Cup defeat at Sutton United in January 2017.
