Grant McCann has told the Sheffield Star he wants to bring Romario Vieira to Doncaster Rovers after the former Leeds United midfielder’s trial spell.

Vieira was released by Leeds at the end of last season, having failed to make a competitive appearance for the Whites.

But according to McCann, who has spoken to people close to the 20-year-old, Vieira’s lack of action was down to reasons beyond his control.

Discussing potential deals for Vieira and the former Bradford City forward Paul Taylor, the Doncaster boss said: “In Romario’s case, he’s more of a development (signing).

“I think he has been cast aside because of his brother (Ronaldo, pictured) at Leeds. I don’t mean that in a bad way to Leeds.

“We see huge potential in him if he is to be the one that is coming in. He’s a work in progress for us really – that is if we can agree personal terms.

“There’s no hiding behind the fact he has been with us, he’s in with the group. I feel as if there is a lot of development in him.

“Garry Monk speaks highly of him. Everyone at Leeds speaks highly of him, even though he didn’t have a lot of opportunities there.

“He’s a project for us. He’s someone who won’t walk into our first team right away, but he might surprise as few.”

Having stifled his sibling’s progress at Leeds, Ronaldo could himself be heading out of Elland Road after being spotted in Italy on Monday.
