Doncaster Rovers manager Grant McCann has told The Doncaster Free Press that Leeds United-owned striker Mallik Wilks still has to learn.

Wilks joined League One club Doncaster on loan from Championship side Leeds in the summer transfer window until January.

The 19-year-old striker has been playing well for Donny, but manager McCann has said that the teenager still has to learn.

McCann made the comments following Doncaster’s 2-1 win against Luton Town at the Keepmoat Stadium in League One this past weekend.

The English teenager started the match and played for 62 minutes, and McCann has outlined the need for the youngster to improve.

Mallik Wilks of Accrington Stanley celebrates during the Sky Bet League Two match between Notts County and Accrington Stanley at Meadow Lane on August 25, 2017 in Nottingham, England.

McCann told The Doncaster Free Press about Wilks learning his style of play: “It’s something young Mallik has to learn and we will teach him, he let the Luton full back out too easily. And when we switched him to the other side he let the other full back a bit too much.

“James Coppinger didn’t because he picked up clever positions. Mallik is going to learn and I think he was much more of a threat when he went up in a two with John Marquis.”

Critical comments

While the aforementioned comments of McCann are critical, Wilks should heed them, as they are only going to help him in the long run.

Wilks is only 19 years of age, and he is bound to make mistakes at his age. What is important is that the Leeds-owned striker learns from his coaches and make effort to improve his game.
