The Leeds United youngster was almost the victim of a big error by the Football Association.
Grant McCann has revealed to Doncaster Free Press that the Football Association have apologised over the mix-up involving Leeds United’s Mallik Wilks.
Wilks, one of the stars of Doncaster’s season since arriving from Leeds on loan, was suspended for Sunday’s FA Cup defeat by Crystal Palace.
But his name was not on a list of suspended players sent by the FA to the League One side last week.
Further investigation proved that the 20-year-old Thorp Arch graduate – who picked up two yellow cards in previous rounds – was indeed ineligible, but Donnie boss McCann says that the governing body has apologised for the clerical error.
“It wasn’t ideal to get a phonecall at half eight, nine o’clock on a Saturday night,” he told Doncaster Free Press.
“It’s wires crossed somewhere. “We’ve received an apology on it. We were led to believe he was okay to play.”
Wilks, who had a second loan to McCann’s side sanctioned by Leeds last month, has netted 11 goals across all competitions this season.
He would have been granted amnesty to play if it was the quarter-final. Rovers lost the game 2-0.
