Grant Leadbitter’s comments on Aitor Karanka are interesting, after he becomes Nottingham Forest target

Nottingham Forest have been linked with a move for Middlesbrough’s Grant Leadbitter.

According to a report in the printed edition of the Daily Mirror (page 44, 15th January), Nottingham Forest are set to make a move for Grant Leadbitter and his past comments about Aitor Karanka suggest that a move could appeal.

Karanka and Leadbitter worked together at Middlesbrough earlier in their respective careers, and the midfielder was a big fan of the Spanish boss.

Indeed, after Karanka was sacked by Boro, Leadbitter spoke out in the Gazette about how disappointed he was that Karanka had departed.

The midfielder said: “Speaking on behalf of the players, the news (of Karanka’s departure) was disappointing. We’ve had three-and-a-half years of memories, some really good memories.

“We’d all like to wish Aitor all the best. He came in this morning, thanking us for all the efforts. We’re a bit disappointed at the minute, but we move on.”

Leadbitter could now be reunited with Karanka, if he does opt to move to Forest.

The experienced midfielder has featured regularly for Boro this term, but Karanka may be hoping that his good relationship with the 32-year-old could persuade him to move to the City Ground.

Forest are looking to strengthen all areas of their squad this month, as Karanka looks to help them out of their slump.

Forest have failed to win any of their last six league matches, and were beaten 1-0 by Aston Villa in Karanka’s first game in charge.
