Yorkshire Evening Post reporter Graham Smyth has delivered his verdict on Tyler Roberts after the Leeds star picked up an injury against Leicester – claiming the Wales ace is in an “unenviable” position under Jesse Marsch.
Roberts, 23, has often been the source of criticism from Leeds fans this season. Since promotion to the Premier League, Roberts has scored two goals in 51 top-flight appearances – and he was used as a sub on Saturday.
But soon after coming on, the Wales ace suffered an injury. He had to remain on the pitch, given he was Marsch’s third substitute after Adam Forshaw and Joe Gelhardt had also been introduced by the American boss.
The Wales star is now in a difficult position, according to Smyth. Patrick Bamford is close to a return and was an unused sub against Leicester. He will be first choice when fit, and Gelhardt came on before Roberts.
“It’s clear that Gelhardt is threatening Roberts’ place, though, and Bamford when fit will be the go-to striker leaving the Welsh international in an unenviable position if he himself is healthy and available,” Smyth said.
Smyth on Roberts: Leeds wrong to give Wales man a new contract?
Roberts has been given plenty of chances and while it might not have been in his favoured no.9 position, he has struggled at this level. Last summer, Roberts penned a new deal at Elland Road until the summer of 2024.
He was being linked with a £10million exit before that new deal. But realistically, he is hardly going to be a player that shines at Leeds – especially with new signings expected in the summer.
If Leeds stay up come May, surely, Roberts will have to be sold but given his contract and lack of form – suitors might not be as forthcoming, had Leeds chosen against offering a new deal.
