Graham Roberts believes that Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino should exile Christian Eriksen.

The Denmark international made a second-half cameo during Tuesday’s 7-2 mauling by Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

But Eriksen was unable to inspire Tottenham in what is becoming a regular theme for the 27-year-old, who has struggled for much of the calendar year.

The former Ajax star, who earns £75,000 in North London [Spotrac], came out after Spurs’ Champions League final defeat by Liverpool in June and said that he wanted to leave the Lilywhites.

A transfer never materialised despite plenty of speculation, and former Tottenham man Roberts has told talkSPORT that Pochettino should freeze him out of the squad unless he extends his contract.

He said: “Christian Eriksen, if he had signed a contract [with Spurs], he would have played last night. For me he shouldn’t be on the bench – he shouldn’t be anywhere near the first-team.

“Because he wants to leave and has come out and said he wants to leave. Then go. If you think it’s better somewhere else, go.”

Roberts is probably right here. For most of 2019, Eriksen hasn’t looked or played like someone who wants to be at Tottenham.

Despite his quality, it can’t be a positive influence on the squad as a whole if Pochettino plays somebody who would rather be elsewhere and maybe it’s time that an ultimatum is issued: sign a new contract or spend the next three months on the outside.
