Tottenham Hotspur’s trophy drought goes on after losing Sunday’s Carabao Cup final 1-0 to Manchester City.

Spurs were second best throughout, but managed to frustrate City until Aymeric Laporte headed home a Kevin De Bruyne free kick in the second half.

Spurs barely laid a glove on City throughout and didn’t look any more like scoring after Laporte’s opener.

This was a tough ask for Ryan Mason, who was managing just his second game as Spurs interim boss following the departure of Jose Mourinho last week.

His task wasn’t made any easier by right back Serge Aurier, who committed a silly foul on Raheem Sterling. De Bruyne whipped in the resulting free kick, and Laporte scored.

LONDON, ENGLAND - APRIL 25: Raheem Sterling of Manchester City is challenged by Serge Aurier of Tottenham Hotspur during the Carabao Cup Final between Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley Stadium on April 25, 2021 in London, England. 8,000 fans are due to watch the game at Wembley, the most at an outdoor sporting event in the UK since the coronavirus pandemic started in March, 2020. Each team has been given an allocation of 2,000 with the remaining tickets split between local residents and NHS staff. (Photo by Tom Flathers/Manchester City FC via Getty Images)

Tottenham legend Graham Roberts was far from happy with the Ivorian defender, and took to Twitter to share his frustration.

Roberts suggested that Aurier is always giving away silly free kicks, and simply will not learn his lesson.

He added that it’s a ‘waste of time’ if you can’t learn from mistakes, and with Aurier now 28, you have to imagine these defensive mishaps will keep happening.

Spurs could cash in this summer though, with the Daily Mail recently claiming that there are doubts over Aurier’s long-term future at Tottenham.

Le Parisien added earlier this month that Paris Saint-Germain want to re-sign Aurier, having allowed him to join Spurs back in 2015.

If PSG do make a move, Spurs would be wise to cash in and find a new right back elsewhere, with Aurier continuing to frustrate defensively.
