Graham Roberts has told Give Me Sport that Tottenham made a mistake in spending nearly £50million on Joe Rodon, Jack Clarke and Ryan Sessegnon. The latter was hooked after 28 minutes during Sunday’s loss to Wolves.
Sessegnon, 21, has played just 25 times for Spurs – since costing the same amount in millions (Mail), when Mauricio Pochettino signed him from Fulham. His best spell while at Tottenham, came on loan at Hoffenheim.
Meanwhile, Wales international Rodon was somewhat cheaper at £11million. But the defender has managed just three appearances since Antonio Conte came in – despite senior players ‘pushing’ for his inclusion.
Clarke is probably the largest waste of money, joining for £10million from Leeds. He has since gone back on loan to Leeds, to QPR, to Stoke and now to Sunderland. Roberts criticised the three signings made by Tottenham.
“You didn’t need to go out and buy Sessegnon, Rodon and Clarke, you don’t need to,” Tottenham legend Roberts said, when discussing the three signings made by Spurs – which equate to a total of around £46million.
Rodon aside, Roberts right about Tottenham duo Clarke, Sessegnon
Rodon cost a reported £11million and while he is struggling for game time, that is a good bit of business. The ex-Swansea man just needs to catch a break. That break may have come in the form of Eric Dier’s groin injury.
But Conte has not used him – and Alasdair Gold has now, perhaps, explained why, stating Rodon has suffered from cracked ribs and fractured cartilage in the last few weeks. But for Clarke and Sessegnon, it is a different story.
Sessegnon is back-up to Sergio Reguilon and Conte’s style suits him. But for £25million, he so far failed to prove that huge fee. For Clarke, Leeds pulled off a brilliant deal to get £10million for him. Their futures are in doubt.
