Former Tottenham star insists decision to leave Belgian behind is sensible.
After playing 90 minutes against Newport County last week, Toby Alderweireld had seemed on course for a full recovery from his hamstring injury.
But the Belgian was left out of the squad to face Arsenal at the weekend and has not travelled to Italy for the club’s Champions League clash with Juventus.
Former Spurs defender Graham Roberts has hit out at coverage of Alderweireld being left at home, and insists there is nothing untoward and that it is a sensible decision from club manager Mauricio Pochettino.
Tottenham have waited this long for Alderweireld to return that it is worth them being cautious over his recovery.
It appears as though something wasn’t quite right with his fitness following the Newport game and Spurs do not want him to re-aggravate the injury.
If extra rest this means he will be fully fit for the second leg then it will ultimately be a smart decision from Spurs, who will be confident they have enough quality to cope without him.
As Roberts points out, Tottenham are in great form and this is no reason for them to be unduly concerned despite Juventus’ strong performances.
