Former Tottenham midfielder Ryan Mason has announced his retirement.
Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Ryan Mason has retired from professional football after current club Hull City confirmed in a club statement that neurologists and neuro surgeons have advised him against a return.
Mason, 26, suffered a fractured skull just over a year ago after clashing heads with Chelsea skipper Gary Cahill, and has now had to admit defeat despite battling hard to continue his professional playing career.
A one-time England international, Mason moved to Hull from Spurs in the summer of 2016 after failing to break into Mauricio Pochettino’s side on a regular basis. He made 70 league and cup appearances for the north Londoners.
Tottenham icon Graham Roberts reacted to the devastating news on Twitter, urging Spurs to offer him some sort of coaching role after Mason joined the club at just eight years of age and came through the academy set up.
Mason was renowned for his intricate array of passing in the middle of the park but now he has been forced to hang up his boots and retire from professional football.
Tottenham fans also reacted to Mason’s decision to end his career at just 26 years of age, with many describing him as “one of our own” after a 17-year association with the north London club.
