Everton lost 3-2 at Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday afternoon.
Brighton and Hove Albion boss Graham Potter has told The Telegraph that he thought Everton had ‘great intensity’ on Saturday – but thinks their spending is piling the pressure on Marco Silva.
Everton made the long trip down to the South Coast on Saturday afternoon, and were looking to build on a strong 2-0 home win over West Ham United.
They went behind at the Amex Stadium though as Pascal Gross powered a free kick through Jordan Pickford, before Everton turned the game on its head with an Adam Webster own goal and a Dominic Calvert-Lewin strike.
Two moments of misfortune cost Everton though, as a very soft penalty on Aaron Connolly allowed Neal Maupay to equaliser for Brighton, before Lucas Digne’s injury time own goal consigned Everton to a 3-2 defeat.
It’s now six defeats in the last eight Premier League games for Everton, and boss Silva finds himself under huge pressure after a disappointing start to the season.
Now, Brighton boss Potter has praised Everton, believing they showed great intensity, structure and work ethic during their defeat at the Amex Stadium.
However, Potter feels that Silva is under pressure because of the money Everton have been spending, and he must get results quicker because of that outlay.
“They had great intensity and structure and a great work ethic,” said Potter. “Sometimes if you spend money it does put a bit of pressure on you and you have to get results quicker,” he added.
Under Silva, Everton have splashed out for Richarlison, Andre Gomes, Yerry Mina, Lucas Digne, Alex Iwobi, Moise Kean, Jean-Philippe Gbamin and Fabian Delph, but find themselves just two points off the relegation zone – even with some decent performances at times.
