Brighton and Hove Albion boss Graham Potter has told the Brighton and Hove Independent that he thinks Mat Ryan’s move to Arsenal is’ fantastic’.
The Gunners brought in Runar Runarsson over the summer, signing him from Dijon after selling Emiliano Martinez to Aston Villa.
Runarsson was a recommendation from goalkeeping coach Inaki Cana having worked together at Nordsjaelland in Denmark, but he hasn’t impressed.
A dismal showing against Manchester City in December convinced Arsenal that they needed to add another goalkeeper, and one came in on Friday.
Arsenal pounced to sign Ryan on loan from Brighton, after the Australian was made available having lost his place to Robert Sanchez.
The 28-year-old is an experienced performer with more than 120 Premier League appearances to his name, and will now look to challenge Bernd Leno.
Ryan was on the bench as Arsenal lost 1-0 at Southampton on Saturday, and Brighton boss Potter has offered his view on the move.
Potter has suggested that the move is a ‘great opportunity’ for Ryan, believing that he will play in Europa League games having made a ‘fantastic’ move.
“It’s a great opportunity for Matty,” Potter said. “He wants to play more and I think he’ll get some opportunities there, especially with the Europa League. It’s a fantastic opportunity for him. I’m pleased for him and I hope he does well, obviously apart from when we play them,” he added.
