Leeds United and Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keen on Daniel James.

Graham Potter Manager of Swansea City leaves the pitch dejected at fu;; time during the Sky Bet Championship match between Derby City and Swansea City at the Pride Park Stadium on December...

Swansea City boss Graham Potter has told Dai Sport that he is hopeful Daniel James will stay at the Liberty Stadium – but admitted he must respect the winger’s wishes.

Swansea hammered Brentford 3-0 at home on Wednesday night, and winger James once again grabbed the headlines with a fine performance.

James, 21, picked up a goal and an assist against the Bees in a man of the match display, continuing his recent red-hot run of form.

The speedy winger impressed on international duty for Wales with a sensational performance against Slovakia, scoring the winner in a 1-0 victory.

Swansea would usually be excited about James thriving so much, but his future is unclear amid intense speculation about his future in South Wales.

James is out of contract in 2020, meaning he is approaching the final year of his deal, and BBC Sport report that talks about a new deal are stalling because James’ agents want a £4million release clause in the deal.

That’s an outrageously low amount for a winger of James’ quality, especially as Wales Online note that Tottenham Hotspur have now joined Leeds United in the race for his signature, just months after a deadline day move to Leeds fell apart.

In light of those new rumours and his superb display against Brentford, Swans boss Potter has now admitted that he’s hopeful James will stay at the club and continue to develop in the Championship rather than move on.

However, Potter noted that he must also respect James’ wishes as he has a career to think about, meaning there’s a possibility he may well move on this summer.

“I want him to stay here and help him improve,” said Potter. “Dan and his representatives are obviously involved and we’re hopeful. We will do our best. It’s as simple as that. The most important thing for me is that he is enjoying his football and improving. It’s his first season in senior football and he still has a lot to do.”

“He shows real quality and real courage in what he’s trying to do. We are pleased to have him. But you have to respect the individual and respect that he has got his career to think about. All I can do is be here for him and help him,” he added.
