Glasgow Rangers midfielder Graham Dorrans is reportedly doubtful for the start of the season as his frustrating Ibrox spell continues.

Jason Holt of Rangers tracked by James Forrest of Celtic during the Betfred Cup Semi-Final match between Rangers and Celtic at Hampden Park on October 23, 2016 in Glasgow, Scotland.

According to a recent report on the Daily Mirror’s live transfer blog (18/06; 16:56), Steven Gerrard decided against allowing Jason Holt to leave Rangers permanently and instead opted to accept a loan deal despite the fact that the midfielder was not in his plans for his next season at Ibrox.

At the time of his Fleetwood Town switch, it probably seemed a greater surprise that Holt did not leave permanently than the fact he did secure a move at all. But perhaps Gerrard may now be kicking himself with the decision to let the former Hearts ace go for the coming campaign given reports regarding Graham Dorrans.

Steven Gerrard is unveiled as the new manager of Rangers football Club at Ibrox Stadium on May 4, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Dorrans endured an extremely difficult first season with the Gers. After an excellent start to life with the Light Blues, injury kept the talisman out for a number of months and when he returned to the side, he did not look anywhere near his best before sustaining another injury.

And now, The Scottish Sun is reporting that Rangers may be without the 31-year-old for the start of the new season as problems with his ankle persist. It is perhaps becoming more and more difficult for the Ibrox faithful to rely on the midfielder.

Holt meanwhile, may not boost quite the same quality as Dorrans, but he has rarely been missing from a Rangers squad since his arrival in 2015. And with plenty of quality amongst the other midfield options, Holt’s reliability could have perhaps been a real plus for the coming season.

Gerrard could not have kept Holt simply just in case one of his players sustained a long-term injury if he felt that his development would benefit most from regular first-team football, but that may perhaps not stop the Rangers boss feeling slightly frustrated that one of his key midfielders continues to struggle with injury just after one of his positional rivals has been given the green light to head out on loan.
