Rangers midfielder Matt Crooks is expected to leave Ibrox this summer.

Scunthorpe United boss Graham Alexander has told BBC Radio Humberside that he is still hoping to sign Rangers outcast Matt Crooks this summer.

Crooks, 23, had a superb 18-month spell with Accrington Stanley with eight goals in 53 games before heading to Rangers last summer, having penned a pre-contract agreement with the Gers.

The giant defensive midfielder struggled for first-team football at Ibrox though, making just three first-team appearances under Mark Warburton before being sent out on loan to Scunthorpe in January.

Crooks impressed with three goals in 12 for the Iron, but he couldn’t help Graham Alexander’s men win promotion to the Championship before returning to Rangers.

Now completely out of favour under Pedro Caixinha, Crooks is expected to leave Rangers this summer, and Scunthorpe are unsurprisingly pursuing a deal to sign him permanently.

With that in mind, manager Alexander has been asked about the situation, and told BBC Radio Humberside that he is still hopeful of bringing Crooks back to Glanford Park despite interest from another club, claimed to be Northampton Town.

Alexander added that Crooks enjoyed his time at Scunthorpe and believes there is a desire from all parties to get a deal done, but must agree a fee with Rangers first.

“I’m always hopeful,” said Alexander. “I’ve had a few conversations with Crooksy to be fair, and he likes everything about us, but he’s got to weigh everything up. He has got other clubs that are interested in him, and we’ve put what we think is our best deal for him to come to us, but we have to agree it with Rangers as well. I’m hopeful, I wouldn’t say I’m over-positive, but I know there is a will from all parties,” he added.
