Scunthorpe manager Graham Alexander has told the Daily Record that talks have been opened with Rangers about another deal for Matt Crooks.

Crooks, 23, joined Rangers from Accrington Stanley last summer having penned a pre-contract in January 2016, with some excitement about his arrival having starred in League Two.

Primarily a holding midfielder, Crooks hit eight goals in 35 games for Accrington last season, but his first season with Rangers did not go according to plan.

The former Huddersfield Town youngster not only struggled with injuries in the first half of this past season, making only three appearances before being farmed out on loan to Scunthorpe.

His move to League One saw him notch three goals in 12 games for Scunthorpe, and he seems to have done enough to impress manager Graham Alexander.

Alexander has told the Daily Record that he is hoping to bring Crooks back to Glanford Park, and Scunthorpe have opened talks with Rangers about a deal to re-sign him this summer.

Alexander did though note that a deal is currently difficult due to an injury, and Scunthorpe are waiting to see what Gers boss Pedro Caixinha decides to do with the midfielder.

“We’ve spoken with Rangers to try and find out Matt Crooks’ situation,” said Alexander. “It’s a bit difficult at the moment as he’s still injured from his time with us so we are waiting on information coming back from them on what his situation is.”

“They obviously have got a new manager who hasn’t seen him play so there is a little bit of a waiting game going on with us to see what they want to do with him,” he added.

Caixinha may want to see Crooks in action, but with Ryan Jack signed and Carlos Pena on the way, Crooks is being gradually pushed down the Rangers pecking order – and a move back to Scunthorpe could be on the cards.
