Graeme Souness is firmly behind Liverpool’s pursuit of Thiago Alcantara, writing that he’s ‘perfect’ for the Premier League champions.

The Reds have been linked with a move for the Bayern Munich midfielder – who earns £205,000 per week [Silly Season] – for much of the summer.

Bayern want £27 million for their treble winner [Bild] but Liverpool are reportedly reluctant to spend that amount on a player who is available for free on a pre-contract agreement from January.

According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Anfield side remain in negotiations over bringing him to the Premier League.

And despite being 29, Liverpool legend Souness claims that he still has a minimum of three years left at the highest level

He wrote in The Times: “Thiago Alcantara, the Bayern Munich midfielder, would be perfect because he works his socks off but is also gifted technically. He is 29, but he still has a couple of years, maybe three, at the highest level left in him.”

You can understand Liverpool’s reluctance to spend so much on a player who’s available for free in four months.

Then again, Michael Edwards and Jurgen Klopp may not have the luxury of time to dither here, with Gini Wijnaldum linked with a move to Barcelona.

If that one materialises, the pressure is really on Liverpool to replace Wijnaldum with Thiago and, with the season starting next week, ideally Klopp and Edwards would like to have the Spain international signed, sealed and delivered before anything happens with the Dutchman.
