Graeme Souness has told Sky Sports that he would advise Tottenham’s board to ignore the praise that the current squad are getting and look to spend big this summer.

Spurs have enjoyed yet another brilliant campaign. Their victory over Manchester United in the final ever game at White Hart Lane wrapped up second spot in the Premier League, while they also reached the FA Cup semi-final in a season that saw Mauricio Pochettino’s men return to the Champions League group-stages.

But Souness has warned the Tottenham hierarchy that as impressive as they have been, simply expecting the current squad to be able to take that next step is a risky strategy.

“The board shouldn’t listen to people like us saying what a fabulous team they’ve got, they should be saying ‘we are going to have to go out and strengthen next year’ – because it’s guaranteed Chelsea will, the team that finished above them,” he told Sky Sports.

“They’ve got to go out and spend big money again. Prove to the fans they are the real deal and are going to have a right go.

“You don’t sit back and wait for this team to become champions because that might not happen. Some of them might not get any better.”

Having shown that last season’s promise was not a fluke, it would not be out of the question to suggest that Tottenham will find it easier to attract great players to the club this summer as they have established themselves as a side that should be looking to challenge for the title while also offering players a platform to play in the Champions League.

And with so much quality already within the squad – it could certainly be argued that Spurs have the strongest XI in the league – making a couple of marquee additions, and perhaps adding one or two squad players, could be exactly what Tottenham need to take that next step from serious challengers to trophy winners.
