The Liverpool legend, who was at Tottenham as a youth player but failed to break into the first team, has said that goal-return has been disappointing in recent seasons for Alli.
The former Scotland international midfielder has outlined how the 24-year-old England international can get better.
Souness wrote about Alli in The Times: “I went big on Alli when he burst on the scene, but he’s at a crossroads now and it will be interesting to see if he turns out to be a nearly man or the player I thought he was going to be after he scored 23 goals in 57 games for club and country in 2016-17.
“With his athleticism and technique, he’s at his best arriving late into the box and scoring, but his return since has been disappointing.
“As a former midfielder myself, what you don’t want is being run back towards your own goal by somebody who constantly gets in there.”
Stats
According to WhoScored, Alli has made 20 starts and two substitute appearances in the Premier League for Tottenham so far this season, scoring eight goals and providing four assists in the process.
During the 2018-19 campaign, the England international made 22 starts and three substitute appearances in the league for Spurs, scoring five goals and providing three assists in the process, according to WhoScored.
Back in 2017-18, the 24-year-old made 34 starts and two substitute appearances in the league for Tottenham, scoring nine goals and providing 10 assists in the process, according to WhoScored.
Alli is a very talented player, but the midfielder does need to step up his game and score more goals as well as provide more assists.
