The Liverpool legend, who was at Tottenham as a youth player, made the comment about the France international while discussing the chances that Spurs head coach Jose Mourinho needs to make to the team.
While analysing the players Spurs may need to move on or replace, Souness suggested that the 33-year-old goalkeeper may be past his prime.
Souness wrote in The Times: “What to do with Ndombele is now the least of the manager’s worries. Start at the back. Does Mourinho know who his best defence is?
“Jan Vertonghen looks like he is on his way out, Toby Aldeweireld has a contract until 2023 but is the ‘wrong’ side of 30 and Eric Dier hasn’t really convinced as an option in central defence.
“Ahead of them, Dele Alli’s form and fitness are too patchy to build an attack around and the other midfielders look honest but no more than that. In goal, Hugo Lloris could be a year past his best.
“I’ll bet there are only two players which the manager would choose to keep and they are Son and Harry Kane.”
Need for a new goalkeeper?
Lloris is 33 years of age, and in recent seasons, the Frenchman has made some costly mistakes.
Although the former Lyon star remains a very good goalkeeper, Spurs need to start thinking about replacing him.
It is not going to be easy for Tottenham to bring in a readymade world-class goalkeeper in the summer transfer window, as they are unlikely to get into the Champions League places and may not be able to cough up a lot of cash.
Perhaps Spurs should look into signing a young and promising goalkeeper who can succeed Lloris in the next one or two years.
