Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has suggested in The Times why Everton attacking midfielder Ross Barkley did not join Chelsea in the summer transfer window.

Everton majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri told Sky Sports that the Toffees had agreed a £35 million deal with Premier League rivals Chelsea over the transfer of Barkley on deadline day.

Moshiri added that at the medical on transfer deadline day, the agent of the 23-year-old informed the club that the attacking midfielder had changed his mind.

Barkley has since explained on social networking site Twitter why he did not leave Everton on transfer deadline day.

The England international attacking midfielder has stated that due to his injury, he decision that that he would make a decision on his future in January.

Former Liverpool and Rangers midfielder Souness has suggested why Barkley did not make the switch from Everton to Chelsea on transfer deadline day.

“I reckon Ross Barkley rejected a £35m move to Chelsea because he could not see himself getting a lot of games there,” Souness wrote in The Times.

Barkley scored five goals and provided eight assists in 32 Premier League starts for Everton during the 2016-17 campaign.
