Tottenham take on Liverpool in the final of the Champions League, and Graeme Souness isn’t happy about it.

Graeme Souness has incurred the wrath of Tottenham Hotspur fans by stating he believes the club should not be in the Champions League final.

Souness told Balls.ie that he feels Spurs are ‘fortunate’ to be competing the final.

He pointed to the number of games Tottenham have lost this season, implying their presence in the final is improbable.

Souness said: “Spurs shouldn’t be there. You say to anyone at the start of the season a team is going to lose 19 games in all competitions, and yet they’ll find themselves in the final of Champions League, you’d say you are talking nonsense.

“But they’ve somehow got themselves there, and I think they are fortunate to be there.”

Tottenham needed the away goals rule to clinch their knockout ties against Manchester City and Ajax, but made it through.

Souness admits he is taking a biased perspective of a Liverpool supporter, before going on to add that only two Tottenham players would get into a combined XI of the two teams.

He said: “I think another way to look at it, I’m looking at it through the eyes mostly, of a Liverpool supporter, and I’d pose a question, if you were picking a team from the 22 players that were going to start the game, how many Spurs players would be in that 11?

“I’m thinking as we’re standing here, Eriksen possibly in midfield, and Harry Kane, then you’ve got nine Liverpool players. But the minute you try and attach any logic to a game of football, you come unstuck.”

Souness’ comments could end up looking especially silly if Tottenham go onto win against Liverpool.

The Reds inflicted two of the losses on Tottenham this season, but in a one off game, anything can happen. Fortunate or not, Spurs are the team Liverpool need to overcome.
