Newcastle sit rock bottom of the Premier League table after losing to Brighton.
Graeme Souness has told Sky Sports that he believes Newcastle United face an uphill task in avoiding relegation from the Premier League this season, as they sit bottom at the moment.
The Toon suffered a dismal 1-0 loss to Brighton at home, with midfielder Beram Kayal scoring the only goal of the game for Chris Hughton’s side in the first half.
Newcastle have only scored six goals in nine Premier League outings, failing to win any matches and losing seven. They have only picked up points following draws with Cardiff City and Crystal Palace.
Souness, who managed Newcastle for two years between 2004 and 2006, reckons Newcastle will avoid relegation but only by the skin of their teeth – stating the club’s ownership issues are a major factor behind the poor form.
“Just. It’s a new experience for [Benitez], I imagine, as desperate as this. It is a hard place to play when things are not going well, to keep wanting the ball under pressure. It is difficult,” Souness said.
“I just think it is compounded by the ownership issue, the lack of investment. It would be far easier being in a dog fight at a lesser club, without so much pressure on you.”
Benitez was frustrated in the transfer window once again, after owner Mike Ashley told his Spanish boss that he would be able to spend every single penny of money that he generated himself; player sales for example.
But The Toon made a large profit after selling the likes of Aleksandar Mitrovic, Chancel Mbemba, Matz Sels and Mikel Merino, meaning the club actually brought in more than they spent – to the frustration of fans.
Newcastle will be looking to finally get their season off and running on Saturday as they make the long journey to the south coast to face Mark Hughes’ side Southampton.
