Graeme Souness outlines two scenarios for Tottenham Hotspur next summer.

Former Rangers and Liverpool manager Graeme Souness has suggested to The42 that Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy will have a tough situation next summer.

The former Newcastle United boss believes that if Spurs have a disappointing season, then the star players will want to leave the North London club next summer.

Souness has also stated that if Tottenham win the Premier League or the Champions League in 2017-18, then club chairman Levy will have to increase the salaries of his star players next summer.

“Tottenham are looking at two scenarios: they’ve a miserable season and they’re not qualifying for the Champions League or getting anywhere near the Premier League,” Souness told The42.

“And then the star players will leave because they’ll say they want to be winning trophies and they’ll point to the lack of investment.

“The other scenario is that they actually win the Champions League or the Premier League. Then they’re all knocking on the door saying ‘I’m a Champions League winner’ or ‘I’m a Premier League winner’ and ‘you have to treble my wages’.

“So 12 months from now, Daniel Levy is facing a difficult round of negotiations with several of his Tottenham players.”

Tottenham enjoyed a successful season in the Premier League in 2016-17 and will be aiming to repeat their heroics in 2017-18.

The North London outfit have a good team and have some wonderful players, such as Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli and Hugo Lloris.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side are fifth in the Premier League table at the moment with seven points from four matches, just three points behind leaders Manchester United.

Former Rangers and Queens Park Rangers midfielder Joey Barton does not expect Tottenham to win the Premier League title this season.

A clip from Saturday was played on the Weekend Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT on Sunday morning (broadcast from 6am, September 10, 2017) in which Barton was quoted as saying: “If they were at White Hart Lane, I would fancy Spurs to mount another title charge.

“I think the fact that they have got that little bit of that Wembley hoodoo just makes me think that it will be top four only for Spurs this season.”
