Graeme Souness has made another U-turn over Tottenham Hotspur’s title chances and says they must be considered as legitimate contenders.

Souness made the comments about Mauricio Pochettino’s side speaking to Sky Sports during the channel’s Super Sunday coverage (3/2).

He said, quoted by Football London, “It’s going to be nip and tuck all the way to the end. There will be upsets, you’ve got to factor Tottenham into that argument as well.

“They have Harry Kane and Dele Alli out right now, which is a major blow to them, but they’re getting by.”

Tottenham have won their last three league games by a single goal, beating Fulham, Watford and Newcastle United, to keep the pressure on the top two.

Souness’ comments come less than a month after he rubbished Tottenham’s title credentials – a fortnight after talking them up.

He told The Times: “If you are deducing that I have just reduced this Premier League to a two-horse race then you are absolutely right. Tottenham are a fine team and certainly close enough to be considered as contenders but I can’t see them winning the title.

“Imagine if Harry Kane were to pick up an injury while Son is away — to whom would Tottenham turn for goals?”

Kane did pick up an injury ruling him out for two months, while Dele Alli subsequently suffered an injury of his own to compile matters.

Tottenham have not been prolific in recent weeks but they have done enough, with Son returning at the right time to score two crucial goals in his last two games.

Fernando Llorente has also stepped up to make a valuable contribution, with a goal and assist in his last two matches.
