Graeme Souness has made his feelings clear about Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen by labelling him as ‘clumsy’ following his side’s 3-1 win over Leicester City on Sunday afternoon at Wembley.

The 31-year-old defender started the game for Mauricio Pochettino’s side and was adjudged to have fouled opposition player James Maddison in the penalty area.

At that time, the home team were leading the encounter 1-0, with striker Jamie Vardy missing a gilt-edged opportunity to put the scores level moments after coming on as a substitute.

Nonetheless, after the match, Souness felt that referee Michael Olivier was right to point to the spot and Vertonghen simply just ran into the Foxes’ playmaker.

“He’s just clumsy Vertonghen,” Souness told Sky Sports PL on 10/02/2019. “He actually just runs into him and bowls him over. Maddison is ready to go down at this point. But it was clumsy from Vertonghen.”

There is no doubt that the penalty decision was a controversial one because, in the first half, Heung-min Son was yellow carded for diving in an incident which wasn’t too dissimilar to Maddison’s.

But it didn’t prove to be costly for Pochettino’s side, who were lucky not to concede more goals from open play with Harvey Barnes missing a number of big opportunities.

Nonetheless, Vertonghen saw the game through and helped his side secure a valuable three points which keeps up their Premier League title hopes.

Over the course of the season, Vertonghen has played 19 games in all competitions and has made a total of 271 appearances for the north London club, according to transfermarkt.
