Rangers manager Gerrard officially started work at Ibrox on June 1.

Steven Gerrard shakes hands with Dave King as he is unveiled as the new manager of Rangers football Club at Ibrox Stadium on May 4, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Rangers icon Graeme Souness has told the Scottish Herald that he believes Steven Gerrard will be shocked by the level of passion from the Ibrox fanbase when he takes charge of his first game with the Light Blues.

Gerrard, 37, officially started work at Ibrox last Friday after penning a four-year earlier last month to replace Graeme Murty in the managerial hotseat at one of Europe’s most historic clubs.

Indeed, the former Liverpool and England captain has hit the ground running by completing moves for three new players in Scott Arfield, Allan McGregor and a permanent deal for Jamie Murphy, while Liverpool’s Ovie Ejaria is set to join on loan.

Gerrard is yet to take charge of any kind of match with Rangers thus far, but he will make his bow as Rangers boss on July 12 when the Gers begin their Europa League qualifying campaign and Souness reckons it will shock Gerrard.

“You need a touch of gravitas to be the Rangers manager – and I think Steven has that,” Souness said. “He certainly has that from the kind of player he was.

“I don’t see that being an issue at all. But I think he will be shocked by the passion, even though he’s coming from one passionate football club to join another passionate club.”

Souness knows all about the history and passion of Rangers, after a five-year spell as player manager between 1986 and 1991, helping the club win three Scottish titles and four League Cups.

Gerrard will be hoping to emulate such success at Ibrox, though he has some way to go in catching Old Firm rivals Celtic who are hell bent on reaching 10 Scottish Premiership triumphs in a row.
