Graeme Souness has a warning for Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Manchester City.

Newcastle manager Graeme Souness

Former Rangers and Scotland international midfielder Graeme Souness has suggested in The Times that Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City could run out of steam.

Liverpool, Tottenham and City all play a high-pressing game and are achieving success at the moment.

Spurs finished in the top four of the Premier League last season playing that way, while Pep Guardiola’s City are the best team to watch at the moment.

Manager Jurgen Klopp has also done quite well at Liverpool so far with his high-pressing style.

Former Liverpool and Rangers midfielder Souness has warned the Reds, Spurs and City that they could run out of steam if they carry on playing the high-pressing game.

“The danger of the aggressive approach of Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham, the top three sides for distance covered so far this season, is that you run out of steam, whether it’s over 90 minutes or the course of the season,” Souness wrote in The Times.

“That happened to Tottenham last season and to Mauricio Pochettino’s teams at Espanyol.

“In his three full seasons there, from 2009-12, his side won four of their final 14 matches in the first campaign, two of the last 13 in the second and three of the last 14 in the third.”

Liverpool are fourth in the Premier League table at the moment with 16 points from seven matches.

Tottenham are currently third in the standings with 18 points from eight games, while City are a point ahead in pole position.

Klopp’s Liverpool will take on fierce rivals Manchester United at Anfield in the Premier League on Monday evening.

United are seventh in the league table and are also in the running for the title.
