Willian had perhaps his worst game in an Arsenal shirt last night.
The Gunners slumped to a 2-1 defeat away to Everton at Goodison Park and Mikel Arteta angered some fans of the North London club by starting Willian.
The 32-year-old, signed on a free contract this past summer following the expiration of his Chelsea contract, was anonymous during the first half for Arsenal and although he improved slightly after the break, he continues to look a shadow of the player he was just last season.
Willian, who earns £220,000 per week with the Emirates Stadium club, also caught stick from Arsenal supporters for his lackadaisical effort in trying to get back for the Toffees’ opener.
And Graeme Souness was certainly miffed by the Brazil international’s work ethic in a scathing half-time assessment of the player on Sky Sports, suggesting it’s a worrying symptom of a greater problem for the visitors.
Souness said: “Watch Willian for the first goal. Sprint back please! Try to stop the cross? I’ll just jog. That tells you that Arsenal are in trouble. Top teams don’t concede goals like that.”
Quite a few Arsenal lads clearly aren’t playing for Arteta but that’s as true of Willian as any of them, to be honest.
So far, the former Blues winger is looking like a dreadful signing and the fact he didn’t cost a penny in terms of transfer fee speaks volumes.
