Warburton’s Glasgow Rangers side have made a mixed start to the new season.

Graeme Souness has insisted that the Rangers board should have provided Mark Warburton with greater funds in the summer window, and suggested that it was always going to be a monumental ask to expect the Gers to win the Scottish Premiership during their first season back, the Evening Times reports.

After clinching the second tier title and beating their Old Firm foes in the Scottish Cup semi-final last season, it appeared that the Light Blues may be in a position to challenge this term.

And that belief was arguably strengthened as a number of experienced players were added to the squad over the summer, suggesting that the Ibrox side may have the perfect blend within their ranks.

However, a poor start to the campaign has seen them lose comfortably to Celtic and more recently, be beaten by Aberdeen in controversial circumstances to leave them in the bottom-half of the table.

But Souness has suggested that he is not surprised by their struggles, but hinted that it did not necessarily have to be that way this season.

“I would like to have seen, like all supporters, the owner spend some money and give the manager a real chance. It looks like they are spending what they generate so he is running it as a business,” he said, as reported by the Evening Times.

“If you are him or a director, that is something you have to run with. If you are a supporter it is not great.

“I am a supporter and like every supporter I am not interested in the bottom line, as long as we stay solvent. Find the money from somewhere and give the manager a chance.”

Given the struggles they have gone through to get back to the top, it would surely be understandable if the board were slightly more cautious with their funds, especially if it benefits the team in the long-run.

But it seems likely given the history of the club that the fans’ patience will soon run out if the manager is not backed financially in the upcoming windows, especially if the gap to their bitter rivals remains as large as it currently is.
