Graeme Souness comments on Tottenham Hotspur’s Dele Alli

Dele Alli is not playing well for Tottenham Hotspur at the moment.

Graeme Souness has suggested in The Times that Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli has not progressed much in the last two seasons.

The Liverpool legend made the comments in the wake of Tottenham’s defeat to Ajax in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final tie at White Hart Lane in midweek.

Souness, who started his professional club football career at Tottenham, believes that Spurs are reliant on Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Christian Eriksen, and has suggested that 23-year-old England international midfielder Alli has not progressed over the past two seasons.

Souness wrote in The Times: “They are still too reliant on a core of three — Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Christian Eriksen — for their steel and star quality.

“There were hopes that Dele Alli might become part of that core but he has made little progress in the past two seasons.”

Harsh comments?

Alli is not having a good season on a personal level in 2018-19, but the Tottenham midfielder is hugely talented and is one of the best young players in Europe.

The 23-year-old has made 21 starts and three substitute appearances in the Premier League for Spurs this season, scoring five goals and providing three assists in the process, according to WhoScored.

During the 2017-28 campaign, the England international made 34 starts and two substitute appearances in the league for Spurs, scoring nine goals and providing 10 assists in the process, according to WhoScored.
