Graeme Souness told Sky Sports during their live coverage of Liverpool’s win at West Ham on Sunday that Jurgen Klopp probably wishes James Milner was ten years younger.

With all the injuries that Liverpool have had to deal with in recent weeks, it has resulted in the 35-year-old earning more game time than he usually would.

Milner started Liverpool’s win at West Ham over the weekend, and even though there was a hilarious exchange between the player and the manager on the touchline when he was subbed, he played his part in the three points being secured.

Souness shared his thoughts on Liverpool’s workman-like midfield, which has included Milner in recent weeks.

“I bet Jurgen wishes James Milner was 25 and not 35,” said Souness. “For me, a big part of Liverpool, and the way they play and the reason it’s such a good squad and they are so successful in the last few years, is their midfield.

“The way they outwork and bully people. That makes them on the front foot all the time, which makes them such a good watch.

“I feel that intensity has been missing this year. Okay, Thiago has been missing and others have had their periods with injuries. Fabinho has to drop back and Henderson.

“James Milner at 35. Can he do that week in and week out? Wijnaldum his head might not be fully focused given that he might be leaving the football club.”

Liverpool’s midfield might be able to return to its best following the flurry of deadline day signings of the club.

Following the season-ending injury to Joel Matip, the champions of England searched the European and the Championship market to boost their defence.

Preston defender Ben Davies made that dream switch from England’s second-tier to the top of the mountain, whilst Ozan Kabak swapped bottom-of-the-table Bundesliga club Schalke for Merseyside.
