Former Rangers player-manager Graeme Souness has told BeIN Sports that he believes his old side can topple Celtic under Steven Gerrard this season and hold aloft the Scottish Premiership trophy.

A renewed sense of optimism is currently circling at Ibrox after the appointment of former Liverpool and England captain Gerrard, who has since brought in 10 new players to mount a title charge against the Hoops.

Gerrard has been backed by the Rangers board and chairman Dave King, bringing in high-profile players such as Scott Arfield, Allan McGregor and Jon Flanagan, while spending bid on centre-backs Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic.

Souness admits that Old Firm rivals Celtic are still some way ahead of Rangers, but reckons it is not impossible for Rangers to finally overtake Brendan Rodgers’ side – stating that he does not believe Celtic are anything special.

“Rangers have been a poor second to Celtic. Celtic have had the advantage of being in the Champions League, year after year and the awards that brings. With that, you can invest in your football team,” Souness said.

“So they’re behind Celtic considerably. But that doesn’t mean to say you can’t overtake them – I don’t think Celtic are particularly strong. They go into the Champions League and get beaten quite badly by teams.

“It is not impossible [for Gerrard to overtake Celtic] but it depends on the support. He’s brought in some players, and hopefully they work for him. Can I see them winning it? I hope they do. It will still be very difficult – it wouldn’t be impossible.”

Rangers are currently in the midst of attempting to qualify for the Europa League group stages, after earning a 1-0 win over NK Osijek in the first leg of their second qualifying round tie last week.

They will be looking to hold onto that lead in order to progress into the third round on Thursday at Ibrox, before beginning their Scottish Premiership campaign on Sunday afternoon away at Pittodrie against Aberdeen.
